The Beira Dakota Mystery
By
Bob Manser

Believe it or not this Turbo prop Dakota has been hangared in Beira for the past fifteen years and never moved.
As in the one picture you can see her tail feathers are getting a bit rotten as the Dak is too big for the hangar so the tail and elevators have been exposed to the Beira tropical weather for all this time.

Ant White who has been a resident in post war Mozambique for many years confirms that the Dak was impounded approx. 15 years ago by customs for smuggling in cigarettes which were in great demand in those days.

It seems such a shame that such a grand old bird is doomed to spend many more years in this hangar unless some orafs member is mates with Richard Branson or Bill Gates and can get one of them to buy it with their petty cash, as this Dak should be either in an aviation museum, or possibly even refurbished as I am sure she has many more flying hours left in her.

Pictures by Kevin Tidy and Rob Jones.
